After that a theme book club cycle with books about pets, family, sports, etc. will help students practice holding conversations about things that they can easily identify with. I am thinking that a non-fiction book club cycle during the 2nd semester can have a focus on Spring only because students can incorporate a Science project by planting seeds and catching insects to study them closer. Also, they have to have a consistent time and space to meet.","dateCreated":"1341334018","smartDate":"Jul 3, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"bin11115","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/bin11115","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"55270766","body":"I think it is important to have your classroom library set up with the right kind of books meaning appropriate reading level, class interests, and organized in a way that is easy for the students to understand. As a teacher, we do need to read to them and show them different things that they will soon be doing with that particular reading club cycle. It will be excellent to teach\/model and actually practice the skills that they will be using in the following week or 2. It's all about scaffolding.","dateCreated":"1341358539","smartDate":"Jul 3, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"bin11115","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/bin11115","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"55273828","body":"While getting ready for reading clubs I think it is important to consider the resources you have available for the genre you will be teaching and also reorganizing your classroom library to support that genre. I know it is hard to get nonfiction books at the level of some of my struggling readers and it is also difficult because a few grade levels are sometimes doing the same type of genre study at the same time which limits the resources I can get from our school library. So I will have to say that these factors will be major considerations.","dateCreated":"1341358985","smartDate":"Jul 3, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"jap11209","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/jap11209","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"55273852","body":"One of the important things that I consider in preparing for reading clubs is the books. Collins states that it is worth it to spend a week or more "preparing the students and whetting their appetites." During this week we need to "surround" them in the genre that will be studied. We use the books in read aloud, shared reading and all components of balanced literacy. Start building a special "collection" of texts that fit the genre that will be studied. The collection will be kept in a special spot in the room. The time that we spend prepping the kiddos and introducing the genre will make their reading clubs run smoothly. I think Reading Clubs would be a disaster without all of this prep work.","dateCreated":"1341418806","smartDate":"Jul 4, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"a.vincik","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/a.vincik","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":41}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
